day thirty-one

 tonight
{from dinner tonight}

it is the last day of August.  the last day of the August Break.  i'm going to miss it...or at least miss having a project that i love, with a title, a group pool to share with others, the simplicity of the idea, and the reminder that it brought of how much i enjoy blogging.

as i sit down at the end of this day, i'm glad that i took the time nearly every day this month to use my camera and put up some sort of post.  i'm thankful that it allowed me to focus on my photography just a bit more than normal and glad that it made me more mindful every day, looking for the small parts and pieces of life that i may have ordinarily missed.  the things like food and cooking, smiles and freckles, pets and nature, beach bags and fences, vacations and walks along the beach.

August is typically the one summer month that i dislike most.  it is always so very hot and unbearably humid and seemingly never-ending.  this year, however, the month of August seemed to skip along at a better pace and has found itself fading into September before i knew it.  i am almost certain it is because i kept my mind a little more busy and focused on the good things that this month brought.  and that is a good thing.

now i'm looking forward to September and the changes that it will bring as we slowly slip into autumn.  hopefully i'll be able to keep up the pace i've set this month and bring myself back to this space with that same mindfulness every day.

a walk in the rain

P8296899

P8296902

today i took a few shots when the rains let up a bit.  it has rained almost non-stop for three days and more to come over the next couple for sure.  it has been dark, dreary, and icky wet.  all this rain makes for great organizing time and movie/book time though.  i'm just hoping that tomorrow's forecast is not as wet as they think it possibly could be.  i need some sun!

simple friday.

lunch

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... rain, rain...SO much rain!

I am thankful for... family...each and every person in it!

From the learning rooms... still organizing...looking over my reading curriculum for my girls

From the kitchen... brown rice salad (above)  with tomatoes, cilantro, avocado, black beans, garlic, and oil and vinegar.

I am wearing...lounge pants and a tee.

I am creating...a bathroom with a clean coat of paint...that's what i've done on this rainy day!

I am going... nowhere today.

I am reading... a new blog....and i think it's going to be one i visit very often.

I am hoping...that this rain eases off for tomorrow...

I am hearing...the constant drip, drip, dripping of rain off the roof.

Around the house...the bathrooms are getting a new coat of paint and the laundry is piling up!
.
One of my favorite things... kale.  really.  it's what's for dinner - with pasta and cream sauce.

A few plans for the rest of the week: finish the bathrooms!

for today

today

i'm tired
i'm headache-y
i'm glad the little one is feeling better today
yesterday was such a long, sickly kind of day
i hope that i (or anyone else for that matter) don't catch the bug she had
i'm happy that my hubby is home today and tomorrow
i'm looking forward to possible time out with my mom tomorrow
i'm feeling hungry but really don't want to cook anything
i may just have some leftover brown rice salad from lunch
one of the boys is already cooking himself a grilled cheese sandwich
i wonder if the girls would be happy with cereal....hmmm.
cancel that...emma just asked for chicken.
i'd love to curl up with my book in peace and quiet
or maybe a movie...a girly romance like Becoming Jane, but then i really love Chocolat.
i think i'll go make myself a glass of iced tea while i cook
and think about it.
book or movie?
that is the kind of day i've had.
i'm looking forward to tomorrow...to begin again.

today....and vacation food

through the candy shop window

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... sunshine and heat and humidity.  i can't wait for the onset of fall-like weather.

I am thankful for... being able to homeschool my kids.  the reasons why seem to multiply daily.

From the learning rooms... organization and scheduling as we near our start date.

From the kitchen... left over butternut squash risotto, from the recipe in this month's clean eating magazine.

I am wearing...denim capris and a button down shirt with black flip flops

I am creating...a crafting to-do list and hoping that i can actually do it!

I am going... not far.  possibly the feed store to pick up a few puppy items!

I am reading... Mockingjay!  i'm SO excited that this book is finally here...i started it immediately!

I am hoping...that my littlest girl feels better soon.  she's not feeling well today.

I am hearing... the low rumble of a movie to distract my girl from her icky tummy.

Around the house...towels are drying on the line, floors need mopping, and i really, really need to clean the windows
.
One of my favorite things... iced tea, unsweetened.  so good on these hot days.

A few plans for the rest of the week: i'm hoping to sneak in a movie with my mom before the week ends!

on my mind

P8196616
{this cardinal mommy was in the tree right below our hotel balcony last week.  we'd watch her come and go and feed her babies every morning with our coffee.}

just a bit of randomness this afternoon:

  • i saw this post from jessica claire photography and fell in love with what she captures.  check out these photos and tell me it's not the cutest wedding idea ever!  i adore it!
  • my friend Kylie shared a link to darrah parker photography and the beautiful poem that she wrote about the beauty in all of us.  i loved it...it touched me deeply and it is so very true.  do yourself a favor and read it and then really think about it.  beauty.  it's in all of us....
  • a couple of things had me smiling/laughing at the grocery store yesterday.  i saw, as i made my way down the bath soap aisle, men's body wash - Old Spice Swagger, i thought that name was just so funny.  it was the first time i'd noticed it, heehee!  ***** on another note, the Target assistant manager was helping out the grocery cashiers and ended up being the one who helped me.  he was hilarious although i tried not to laugh at him.  he was, the entire time, making random and constant comments out loud about nearly every product i was buying, lol!  he was giving me positive feedback about nearly all my choices...my extra virgin olive oil, my free-range ground beef, my kale and squash choices, even my shampoo!  it was like his mouth was freely saying what his mind was thinking, lol!  i was just glad that i didn't come through his line with a cart full of junk food and i'm really glad that it wasn't the week for a purchase of feminine products...yikes!
  • it's been hard this week to get back into routine after last week's vacation.  it's really a shame that we can't vacation all year, then only work a week or two...hmm.  i might as well forget that little idea, huh?  :)
  • the upcoming john mayer concert on labor day has me daydreaming...i can't wait to go!  i've been waiting since april for that concert!  it's going to be extra special since the hubby and i will be staying away for the night!
  • i'm actually feeling the itch to sew and knit the past couple of weeks.  i'm thinking about pajamas and reusable grocery bags and quilts and an afghan....oh, and how about this!  we'll see how crafty i get!
  • oh...as i was browsing books-a-million yesterday i came across Clean Eating magazine.  I have to say that  i love it!  i'm not usually a magazine kind of girl, but boy do i love this one!  i took it with me to starbucks and had a cup of coffee as i browsed the simple, easy, healthy, and clean recipes inside.  ideas on how to feed a family of 4 in the healthiest way possible for under $10 a meal...so that means great ideas for my family of 6!  lots of whole foods, simple preparations, and healthy ideas!

okay...enough of my ramblings today.  back to the August Break for tomorrow!

a little trip

P8136310

to the Smoky Mountains is where I've been.
We spent all last week there on vacation, taking it easy,
watching the kids play in the creeks,
taking in the beauty of the national park, eating meals
prepared by someone else and not washing clothes.
This morning is back to reality for us.  The hubby is
back to work, I have a grocery list a mile long, and
the kids are a little sickened that I'm also picking
up school books for them to start on later this week.

It was a wonderful time though and I'm so thankful
that we got a chance to get away and do nothing
more than just enjoy each other.
Good times...really good times.

From the kitchen...

Around the house...
laundry is under control, yet the floors are not...
One of my favorite things...hugs and kisses from my kids :)
