today i'm really feeling tired.
i did some running around for an appointment with my boy this morning,
did some never-ending household stuff this afternoon and
we've got a late christmas get-together with the neighbors tonight
and i'm really hoping that tomorrow will be totally uneventful.

i've got a book i'd like to finish and a movie that i'm dying to watch
and i've also got to get all my men packed up for their annual big hunt.
they'll be gone several days and those are the days that my girls and me
do a whole lot of nothing.  i'm really looking forward to it.

a whole lot of nothing sound terrific right now.

the last few days
we have been in
recovery mode.
the holidays always
zap me of my energy,
my mental energy that is.
i spend time thinking about
christmas day, time spent with
family, the gift choices
i made for the kids, wondering if
i'd make the same ones again.
i start to feel thankful that my 'plate'
isn't quite so full during this week after
and i'm looking forward to moving
ahead and onto next week when all
the busyness will be over and life
can seem to begin again.
there is something quite exciting about starting
the new year. the possibilities feel endless.

christmas eve :: december views 24

christmas eve.  already.
it blows my mind to see just how fast this december has gone by.
and now the time we've been anticipating is here.
the kids are excited
the kitchen is busy
the coffee pot is brewing constantly.

i just realized that the tree that has stood in the corner
quietly glowing since thanksgiving and gathering under its branches
the gifts that we've picked for family and friends
will not look the same after this morning.

tomorrow morning it will be full of
piled wrapping paper and empty boxes
and its needles will be scattered everywhere.
its purpose will have been served and the kids
won't gather around it anymore to spy the gifts
underneath, they won't take their little self-wrapped
packages and pile them around it, picking the perfect
spot to 'hide' it from their brothers and sisters,
and this mama will most likely be contemplating when
she can drag it out of the house because she just can't
take vacuuming the needles any longer.

but for now,
at this moment,
it is quite beautiful standing there
glowing in the corner, holding onto the gifts
that we want to give this christmas.
this quiet christmas eve morning, as i'm sipping my coffee
and the oven is preheating
and the the kids are still sleeping
and the house is still orderly,
i'm sitting here enjoying the moment,
being thankful,
and feeling very, very blessed.

Merry Christmas to you and your families.
I hope this blessed season finds you full of joy and peace and love.

the cousins stayed with us last night.
the living room floor was completely covered
with pillows and air mattresses and blankets
and boys and girls and giggles and excitement.
it was such a great night...they had so much fun.

this morning we got a super-early start to the day,
lots of cookie baking and pie-making, and keeping
things clean and clutter free around the six wild kids
running through the house.  they played outside for
the majority of the time and would make their stop
at the cookie jars when they'd come in.  they helped
me when i needed it and we had everything nicely
prepared for our little dinner party in the evening.

i made homemade lasagne and garlic rolls and salad.
oh...also homemade lemon pies and those jars of cookies, too.
we ate and drank and talked and laughed at the kids and
felt so thankful to have this time together, this season of
celebration, this family.

last night we visited
the local gardens' annual
christmas in lights and it
was beautiful.

we had a long walk under the most
gorgeous christmas light display,
a night of perfect temperatures,
a night of laughing kids, holding hands,
holiday music, and family.

this december is moving forward so very quickly.
the time to stop and savor the moment is now
while we're in it.  this moment is beautiful.

the cousins are here!

the cousins are here!

the cousins are here!

s'mores and hot chocolate by the fire
while we watch the moon rise.

good memories in the making.

have a great night, all.

finally finished my shopping today...thank goodness.
i am so definitely not a shopper.
the headache is still trying to hang around, but i'm hoping
with a cup of homemade chicken noodle soup and
an evening of christmas movies, i'll be good as new by tomorrow.

hoping this jolt of caffeine will end the headache.
please, oh please.  :(

however, i'm looking forward to the next six days
and trying to set my mind to fully enjoy each of them
and make them as memorable as i can for the kids.
these days ahead are the days of magic...

today has been busy
and headache-y.
we went to a christmas parade,
then to visit some friends while the kids played
together, then home again to dinner in the
crock pot, thankfully.

now i'm off to nurse away this headache, hopefully,
while the kids stay the night at the grandparents'.

fingers crossed that tomorrow will be better!

Picnik collage

there was a bit of a break from the
cold weather yesterday.  it was warm
enough for short sleeves and even bare feet.
the girls and i took a walk around collecting
big leaves from the neighbor's sycamore trees
and looking at acorns and stopping on the grass
for a while to talk and see all the goodies in claire's purse.

Picnik collage

as evidenced by the blue stickiness on her face,
she'd had a blue candy cane just before
the walk, however it didn't deter her from putting on a
little lip gloss and also applying some on her sister.

these are the moments that remind me to slow down,
especially during this christmas season.  these are the times
that make up the memories we'll have in the future.

when almost everything was pulling my attention elsewhere...
the dinner needed to be cooked
the wash needed to be put into the dryer
the dogs needed to be fed and walked
the clean sheets needed to be put on the bed
the floors still weren't mopped
the phone was ringing...

i stopped.

and i thought about this very moment,
the one that i was about to let slip away.
the one where i'd again say "maybe later"
or "in a minute" or "how about tomorrow?"

this time i didn't say those things.  this time i paid attention
and let everything else wait instead.

i know it's the best trade-off i've made in
a very long time.

i hope you find some time very soon to let everything else wait, too.

a shot from a couple of days ago
at a coffee shop
i stopped at while
finishing my shopping.

i certainly hope i'm finished...completely.
i'm sure there is something
i forgot to add to the list,
something that has slipped my mind
as this holiday season is one where
i mentally arrived completely unprepared.

i'm trying to remember to savor the moments,
notice the small things, keep the stress level
down.  and i have for the most part.
but there are moments of mental panic
at the realization that we're only nine days away.

oh my.

next year i'll be sure to have everything
done by thanksgiving.  the holidays are so
much better that way i think.

so how do you prepare and shop and
do the holiday thing?  are you an early
bird or are you more of a last minute

happy thursday night, all.

the start of the day was filled
with a little shopping
a little craft time
a visit with santa
a visit with daddy at work
and a snack or two before we came back home

the end of the day
was filled with a messy house
messy kitchen
messy kids
and that was all before the power went out...
then we had all the messiness in the dark
along with cooking supper
and eating supper
and of course there were spills
and even more messes
before the power returned.
i admired the way the kids were willing
to pass the time while waiting and i am
so very thankful for a fireplace to warm us
and a gas stove so that i could finish cooking,
but i have to admit that after several hours
i was beyond ready to have our power return.
nothing pushes our reset buttons quite like being
forced back to basics when you don't have
the little big luxuries that we take for granted
day in and day out.

this weekend has been a lazy one.
full of holiday movies,
excessive coffee drinking, and sofa sitting.
a little cookie baking and book reading was
thrown into the mix to keep it really interesting.
tonight i actually tried to be somewhat productive
as i started the laundry, cleaned the kitchen, &
made lasagne and garlic bread.

we all gathered at the table together as usual
while christmas music played in the background
and the kids took turns imitating some of their
favorite movie quotes while darrell and i laughed.
we watched the girls eat primarily the pasta portion
of their lasagne, drink from their favorite cups and pass
on the garlic bread while the boys picked the little chunks
of tomatoes from theirs.  we watched the boys choose water
to drink and the girls choose sweet tea.  we listened
to them laugh and tell jokes and watched them lick sauce from their lips.

we were together.  completely enjoying each other
and the moment we were in.  i was being as mindful tonight
as i'd like to be at all times, taking notice of the little things.
taking photos and mental notes, being thankful that i
have this.  this opportunity, this family, this love.

this weekend has been a good one indeed.

and all other citrus fruits
are plentiful this time of year.
we keep a box of juice oranges
on hand for snacking and my favorite way
to have them is to juice them
in an old fashioned juicer
so that you get every last bit
of yummy pulp from the orange.
so thick that you could possibly

girls' day out :: december views 07

december views 07

today was our girls' day out for some christmas shopping.
we do it every year (and also a separate boys'/mom's day out, too)
and it is always reserved to be a special day that we look
forward to. we start out early with breakfast at their favorite
restaurant and then we shop, or mostly browse, to their heart's
desire. they pick out gifts for their brothers and give me ideas
about the gifts they'd like to get for grandparents, too.
this afternoon, we took a break at starbucks and they had some
vanilla milk and a chocolate chip cookie while i had my regular, fresh brewed coffee,
and we just sat and talked. i watched their facial expressions as they were
talking, the way claire moves her hands as she's explaining something,
the way emma can carry a conversation in such a grown-up manner,
the missing teeth in their chocolate-filled smiles, the light in their
eyes as they anticipate their brothers' reactions to the gifts they picked
out for them....

so much going on in this mama's heart these days. so much goodness.
so much to be thankful for and i don't want to miss one second of it.

monday :: december views 06

today. monday.
full of domestic chores
like picking nearly every turnip in our garden
to pack away into the freezer since we're expecting
a hard freeze tonight, lots of laundry, including all the
doggy bedding, grocery and christmas shopping-list-
making, and making dinner for my parents
since they're coming over to eat with us.

i love times like this when every moment is full
and in the evening you feel accomplished
and loved by the ones you share every day with.
yes i do.

today was a busy, blurry kind of day.
i left out with the kids this morning to go
window shopping and to see harry potter
while my laundry was piled and my kitchen
was messy and the floors were dirty.

we had a good day out together anyway and
all the messes waited patiently for my late return.
now there is broccoli soup on the stove and
laundry in the washer and dirt on my floors :)

all is well in my world right now.
